If you haven't taken the trip to Cambria/San Simeon and visited Hearst Castle you need to take a trip. This is a great ride to prettier scenery and cooler weather. Now that things are heating up in the Valley, get some relief and relax.

I like to stay at the Cambria Pines Lodge
Nestled in the trees and very serene, the Pines Lodge is known for it's remarkable gardens. They have a GREAT hotel restaurant and have live music on the weekends. Wine tours also mark this as one of the main pick-up points if you want to do some tasting while in the area. Excellent breakfast...not just muffins, but pancakes, biscuits, the works, are included with all of the rooms.

Hearst Castle is one of the neatest places to visit.
If you have been before check out a different tour, there are 5 of them that go to different areas of the castle. If not expect some of the most ecclectic and opulent architecture and art, the likes of which we will never see again.

Downtown Cambria is quaint and small with antique stores, restaurants and boutiques. The ocean is right across the street, if not a bit too cool for swimming, it is great to just enjoy.

For a lovely detour, about 1/2 way to Cambria on 46, or 10.5 miles after you leave HWY 101, turn right on to Sant Rosa Creek rd. It parallels HWY 46, but is more narrow and windy (wine-dee) than 46. Slower, but fun on a bike. Beware the farm dogs at the farm by the creek. This takes you into the 'back' of Cambria, by the high school.
