I have a question. I am thinking about getting a track bike but dont have alot of funds to spare. What would be a good price for one thats running or needs some work.

The Wife has told me she really does not want me to take the R1 out to the track so I have to find something kind of fast if it needs work. Just give me some prices of what you would think.

Thanks
Mike

$2000 to start. Rest of your funds will be spent installing mods.

Now you're talking.

Are you looking for another liter bike or 600?

If you are looking for a 600 they can range from all kinds of price.

Here this link is from the WERA forums. I did a search in California only. This should give you an idea what they are going for.

Just imagine...blowing through Riverside all spidermonkey'd out...get on the throttle just before the apex...front tire lifts gracefully as you exit. You carve it into the next left with authority and light the rear up, weighting the outside peg with all ya got in an attempt to tame the wild fury that IS the Graves R1.

Then the glory of pulling into the paddock amid the stares of the envious, and wild cheering of your adoring fans.

Regardless of riding level...

I would recommend a 600 for the track. You learn more because you focus on improving your riding. Becoming smooooooooooooooth and your riding improves. A 1000 makes it easy to make up time, by just turning the throttle and WHEN it bites you in the ass, it'll cost you. A year or two old 600. One that has been on the market for sometime. Making parts easy to get. Dealer, Ebay, and other vendors that will help with parts. Consider your support net work as well. Tires, suspension and chassis are the most important so the bike is set up for YOU. Also, consider which tracks that you are going to ride. Spring rates are the single most important element for roadracers and almost always get it wrong.

Theres an old saying, "If you can get it to the ground, what good is it doing you."

If need help, email me at piratemotorsports@hotmail.com or (559) 572-5415

Track Prep or Race Prep is are business. Crash and Custom work. Tig/Mig welding. Fiberglass repair. Race Painting. Machine work. DynoTuning. Suspension Service and Ohlins Speciality.

We will be offering trackside support in 2009.

My ideal is to find a fairly 1-4 years old bike that has been down and deem a total lost by the insurance company, but the bike is is fairly great shape (frame wise and motor wise). Be able to buy it for $900-$1600 and make it into a track bike. Money save on buying the bike would be money for quality aftermarket upgrades such as suspension, brakes, and tires.

Nope you're not dreaming.

I bought my 2006 GSXR 1000 back from insurance for $1600. 2007 GSXR 1000 for $900. And my buddy bought his 2006 Honda REPSOL 1000 for $1200.

All the bikes only had minor damages. Yes, you would have to tear the bike down and put new clips-ons, rear sets, fairings, if wheels bent... new wheels. But all these were minor since the frame, motor, and forks were perfect.

Just buy a track bike that is all done up for 3 to 4 grand and let the poor sap before you take the loss on all the aftermarket parts and such. It will cost more up front, but will save big later. It will also be hooked up the first time you ride it, except for some suspension tuning.
