This will be our first event at the Big Track this year. If you haven't been there, you should definitely check it out. It can be as FAST or slow as you want it to be and it is WIDE. Great fun and a slice of American race track history. It is the oldest, purpose built race track in the country. Who wants to come and play?

If the day is lightly attended, we can certainly work with some "group jumping." You just need to be respectful of the C group if you are a B rider etc.

And NOWHERE is getting off the track safely as important as it is at Willow. The exit to the track is right at turn 8 and 9... the fastest section. You have to stay WAY left all the way through 8. There is a painted line out there. Cutting across 8 last minute to get off the track can be catastrophic.

Some of you guys really should come check out Willow, especially if you have only done Buttonwillow. It is certainly a lot of fun and different. It is funny to me that Streets and Willow Springs are in the same place. It is like someone said, "ok, we have the wide really fast track, now let's build a narrow, really technical one."

We will certainly see what we can do. As you ride with us, you will realize that we are pretty flexible on stuff like this especially if the turn out is light. We just ask in return that when we have to be a little more rigid on the days that are sold out, that we don't get any friction over it. We also, in the interest of fairness, can't go too overboard either. On the one hand it is a business, and a hard one at that, and Ti2TT would like to be around for years to come to provide these days for everyone.

The Devonshire Inn is the closest to the track. It isn't the nicest place in the world but there is not much out there in Rosamond. There is a nice seedy dive bar around the corner for an adult libation or 2 the night before as well.

Other than that, the towns of Lancaster and Palmdale are both bigger and close and I think that they both have your typical selection of Motel 6's and such. We used to stay at the Essex House in Lancaster?? but they changed it to an old people's home. It was great... nice rooms, nice pool, and tavern inside of it with a pool table.

Well I had a wake up call when I was looking how to get to the track. It will cost me just $120 in fuel for the vehicle alone not counting the fuel for the bike and the hotel is $90/night.

Anyone want to car pool and split the cost of the hotel?

Oooh $90 a night huh??? Hmmmm the crappy old Devonshire may be the place after all then. Bryan, was that price with the "Willow Springs Discount." If you tell them that you are going to the track, they will cut you a break on the room.

They do allow camping at the track at Willow Springs as well, if that is something that interests ya. We will probably be camping there for the 4th of July 3 day extravaganza of 1 day at Streets and 2 days at the Big Track!

Yes, that is the "racers" price...

A small toyhauler is in the works probably something like a 24' bumper pull, but not sure in time for the 4th.

Toy Hauler sounds about right for the 4th if you could make it happen. We will be grilling I think and having a few beers at night. If only Willow would let us have a fire pit...

Anyhew, If $90 is the "racer" price, I know that the Devonshire is closer to $60. It is true however that you get what you pay for and a full, real breakfast and the 2 free drinks at the bar, could easily eat up at least $20 of that difference. I think we are gonna try this new place and see how it goes.

turns 8 and 9 are real fast... i go through them faster than i go through riverside...

that track is a lot of fun... it's not extremely technical, but it's fast and fun...

you guy's will like it...

watch out for turn 2... it tightens up at the exit, and rises up, so you cant really see the exit... it looks like it opens up so you get on the gas, but you cant see the exit, then when you do see it, you realize you are running wide...

Willow is different than Buttonwillow pretty much all the way around. Willow is WIDE and fast. The only "technical" part is called the Omega. It is turns 3,4,5 and be careful of 3!! The rest of the track is so fast that it manages to bite people. It is uphill, a little oddly cambered, and is the area that we see about 80% of our crashes there. Turn 8,9 are Riverside on steroids, however only if you want them to be. You can cruise around Willow in 3 minutes or BLAST around it in under 1:20 so it is what you make of it.

Is WS a place for the 600? or should I tape up the 929? or should I bring them both?

600's are fantastic for WS. They have all the normal classes that any other track has at their races. Rich Oliver competes, and does very well, every year in the Toyota 200 on a 250 2 stroke, and he is racing against the Jeremy Toyes and Jason Pridmores of the world on their SuperBikes!

We have people come out on Ninja 250's and all kinds of stuff. Most of our Control Riders are on 600's... It's just when you get older and fatter that you realize the, "If I can't be good, I may as well have a lot of horsepower..." mentality. Bring em both if you want. The only thing that we don't see a whole lot of at WS is motards.

Conversely there are usually quite a few of them at Streets as that track suits them better. I have a great time on my 1000 at Streets so...

I think you would have fun on both. It definitely is not a huge hp track as I have seen many 600s with a skilled rider clobber liter bikes. You would have fun on a liter bike eating people up on the straights or you can have fun trying to keep up with the liter bikes on the straights. :D

Its a great track that flows well and is so wide that you can virtually pass anywhere...in my case, get passed everywhere

You can go fast or slow and its still fun, there are a few turns like 2 and 8/9 that go on forever....if you like riverside I think you will like T2 its the shizzle.

Great elevation changes and pretty much everywhere is banked. You dont have to use your brakes very much and its a lot of throttle control so its a great place to learn about being smooth. Its fun wringing it up to 6th gear and holding it until you have to bang down the gears for T1...its also pretty fun entering T8 in 6th gear where you can really "hang em out"

Gearing is subjective as people's speeds are VERY different, especially at WS! If you are in the 1:20's your gear selection etc is VERY different than if you are in the high 30's or low 40's. Doesn't sound like a huge difference but it is. There are also individual rider's preferences too. Sometimes people short shift in certain turns and others wring the damned things neck until it is about to POP. You two are talking about the difference between a pumped up 600 and a Ducati twin, so the conversation about gearing should probably end there. :D

^^youth and vigor are no match for age and treachery...

Hows the racing going this year bro?

Finally got my pile up and running...its was an electrical problem that was cutting out fuel delivery intermittently...no bueno...like in T9 when Curtis Adams was rolling around the outside of me...lol

So I havent ridden it confidently since December. This past weekend was the first time back there at willow and it was also my first expert race weekend. I couldnt get it dialed in and was running anywhere from 31s to 33s.... in practice.
I finally got my ish together for the 600 superstock race and ran my best time 28.5:rolleyes: so I was happy with that. Almost draft passed my buddy and missed it at the finish line by 0.03 seconds...:D

I want to do some rounds after its cooled down a bit...maybe a couple of wera rounds...fontana and vegas?
I might try for next month but thats not likely.

Come out and do a big willow day!

I sure know how that feels. On my last race at wsir last year John Ryan got me by .009sec for 1st place. Corner workers said they could hear me cussing a blue streak throughout the whole cool down lap. Oh well...

Anyway...sounds like you got the train heading in the right direction again. Good luck on future rounds. We gonna see ya at the streets for round 3 in Oct?

I dunno...I'm of 2 minds on this one. On one hand, yeah the T2-T6 re-pave is nice and def shaves a sec or so off most folks' lap times.

But on the other hand it does away with the penalty bump going into 4 and the grand canyon ditch at the apex of 6. Those were GREAT opportunities to make up some time or stretch a lead.

I guess it doesn't matter really though. We all have the same pavement to work with and let the best man win...

Well, there are a few good ripples growing on the new pavement in the apex of turn 5 and the fast line out of turn 6 has a good bump just befor the transition from the new to old pavement that will lift the front end a little if you are on it hard. The new tarmack is "growing" character quickly.

not sure yet. We can either do a motel 6 deally or av inn which is a lot nicer...knowing you....:D

the av inn has a nice bar and you get two free drinks per person...its about 90 and the motel 6 is about 50

Well Sean, you know me... High class all the way. I think we are gonna try the AV this time too. Although, Aaron, Evan, and I found this little dive bar that is like a bikini strip club around the corner from the Devonshire last time. Hmmmm. I think AV it is though. You kids gonna get there at a reasonable hour or roll in late again?!

I still have my F150 Super Crew if I need to haul something heavier. My dad's 05 chevy was only averaging 17 mpg on the freeway. My truck will average around 20-22 mpg on the freeway and it has 245 hp with 282 ft/tq and weighs over 1000 lbs less than my Ford. My HP to weight ratio is much better than the Ford. don't get me wrong, i am NOT a chevy fan by no means, but i had two late 90's GMC dually 4 x 4's and i had no prob's with either one... i take that back, the daytime running light relay went out on the '98... that is hardly a problem...

All car makes have cars with problems. Sometimes i wonder if it is some type of job security. GM has several problems with various models. i think the most common are fuel pump level sensors, gauge clusters, window regulators , sun roof modules on the g6 with the 3pc glass. just to name a few.:D

What a great day inspite of the high winds. It is amazing how fast Byron and Adrian got during the last half of the track day. We were all three out there dicing it up and having a good time. Adrian was kicking some butt on that new track bike of his.

As far as Willow Springs goes it was a good track, but don't think it a track worth a 3+ hour drive. I would rather spend the time driving to T-Hill if I am going to spend that kind of time on the road.

Great day for sure!! Little windy in the afternoon but for Willow Springs that is pretty normal. 85 and sunny though.

I had a great time riding with you 3. Hope it was helpful and fun. I am super curious to hear how Bridgestone handles the tire issue that you had Bryan.

Willow is the kind of place that takes a little getting used to. The fun factor just gets higher and higher as you go faster and faster. Streets of Willow couldn't be more opposite so it is kinda cool having both of them at the same venue and sometimes the track day orgs get to run them back to back. You get one day of amazingly technical and one day of amazingly fast. Don't be too quick to write it off though because of the drive. Like everywhere else, it takes time to learn it and realize where you can go fast etc.

Good having you guys and hanging out the night before. Until next time!!

ps- Since you are in the business of trying new tracks, I can't stress Infineon enough!! Best track I have been on without question.

Thank you Matt and Aaron for a great weekend! Take it to the track rocks! This was definitely the smoothest running track day I have been to in a while. No one got hurt, which is most important. This is a wonderful track if you like it fast. I learned a huge amount about riding very fast sweepers. I am had a great time. The track is nice and wide and it is not a track that will punish you for being off the race line. The end of the day even had a suprise. Four brand new Challenger RT's were unloaded and getting prepped for tuesday. These cars are amazing! Had a great day on the new ZX6rr track bike! No major problems and this bike is amazing to ride! I will enjoy this bike for a long while. A slipper clutch and a quick shifter are two very handy tools for the race track. Wish I had them on the 1098! This little bike rocks for the track. The liter bikes walked us on the strraights but It was so much easier to ride in the turns. Point and shoot baby!

Nice Adrian!! Appreciate the Kudos. We do try very hard to provide a quality experience for everyone and as I have said before, alot of it depends on who shows up rider-wise. We only had 4 incidents yesterday with over 90 riders and none of them required any type of ambulatory service=good times.
Great doing a couple sessions with you. Once we got you cleaned up on the Omega there, you were really doing great. A little more experience around there and some getting used to the Kawi and you will be smoking it in no time. Good stuff.

Great footage Byron. I hope you enjoyed the track. It really is a one of a kind. It is a high speed playground with very little technical and lots of width. The guys that go REALLY fast around there have stones the size of bowling balls. Jeremy Toye has done a 1:17.5 around there! I have squeaked out a couple of 1:28's just for a frame of reference and have no idea where those guys are making up that kind of time. Good for them. See you guys soon, and like I said, good hanging out the night before! We'll have to do it again.
