I just signed up for it after finding this date scheduled on their website. It's a friday night track day from 7pm - 2 am (per their site) at Streets of Willow 'under the floodlights' for 99 bucks.

I'm thinking this is a recently added date since I didn't see it on the schedule a month or two ago. I'm pretty excited about this. I've always wanted to ride the track at night and this is a pretty killer opportunity. Anyone else gonna go?

Also, for those of you who have ridden with Motoyard, what was your experience like?

Genius idea for summer events in Rosamond. Even better if the track is well lit. Not sure how I would fare riding on a Friday night after a week of work and no chance to sleep prior to the event.

I've got room for gear and another bike if anyone needs a hand getting anything to the track.

Hopefully someone won't mind me setting up next to them and chewing their ear off while my groups not out, Ha. Looking forward to seeing all of you out there, this is going to be fun!

Did anyone else notice their special night time track requirements? They say if you have headlights and running lights to go ahead and leave them uncovered and just pull the brake light. Definitely had me wondering just how much light they are going to have out there?

That sounds crazy, if you pass someone that is running headlights and ur not and ur depending on the lights overhead, the shadows will suck and really mess up your depth preception. just my 2cents but what do i know...

Naw I thought the same thing, unless the lights they rent are bright as fook it could def. mess with the ole' depth perception. I almost wanted to tape a red running light on the back of my bike, Ha.

I will definitely be keeping my riding within a pace that the conditions will allow for.

I have been doing many laps in the land of video games and watching all of the helmet cam footage I can find on streets of willow. It will be fun enough just learning a new track, I shouldn't need to scream around her all out to get some beginning breaking zones down.

I don't mean to sound like a narc at your all night moto-rave, but I predict this...
14633

Thankfully, you've got the head lights. You'll see the desert scorpions glowing before you run them over...
14634

Oh, and watch out for these too...
14635

I find that my depth perception is way off at night because of the shadows. Maybe you'll all learn some new night riding skillz. Have fun and be safe!

McLuvin_R1
July 8th, 2010, 07:25 PM
Track Daz is working on something like this. I'll wait for them, they seem to do things better.

I can't imagine riding on a track with headlights at night.

Blakester is right, the shadows and constant glares of light will really screw your depth perception.

A for cool factor
F for thinking it through

Calkidd
July 8th, 2010, 07:33 PM
I am sure they thought it through and will do the best they can to make sure it is a safe and fun night for all. I applaud them for stepping out of the box and doing something unique. I am sure it is not the first time for night time track days, but for this area it is.

Motoyard has been doing this for a minute and I am sure hey consulted the track folks and other people with experience in this area.

But Derik is right, night riding is much different and depth perception is diminished. Just go back and listen to the AMA riders regarding Daytona and the GP riders regarding Qatar.

stikyy if you read this you might want to consider all headlights to be disconnected.

McLuvin_R1
July 8th, 2010, 08:00 PM
If they allow headlights, riders will either like or dislike it. With it ultimately being dangerous they should just do away with it.

Either way I can't complain. Im not even going.

If it doesn't work out; I'm out 99 bucks, and some gas money. We are going to get a couple sessions in the daylight and I'll decide how safe it feels as it gets darker.

If it does work out; I will get to have a great time riding the desert at night, experiencing first-hand what the first 'track night' is all about.

Either way, I'm going to the track. :D

I agree: Good times! I had so much fun I woke up with a huge grin this morning. At first I wasn't feeling too optimistic about it. After hitting traffic and arriving a little late and then the huge delay while getting my tires mounted I missed the first couple (few?) sessions which resulted in my warm up session being right in the middle of everyone else's hedonistic free for all. I am still laughing at the fact that I was so slow during the first few laps that even the 'control riders' blew me off. By the end of the night I really picked up confidence though and even managed to shift through a few gears! ;)

I had so much fun hangin' out with you guys from the forum. Sergio, your assistance in getting my rear wheel back on the bike was invaluable. Thank you so much. I probably would have missed another session if it wasn't for that.

Overall I think the lighting was about as good as could be expected for the circumstances. No complaints there. However, my only constructive criticism is that the amount of people in C group at the peak of activity was pretty big. I think Sergio counted 40-45 when we were lined up at final call for pre-grid, that's not counting any stragglers who entered the track later. This wouldn't have been such a big deal but there were also some B group riders in the mix that were really pushing the dynamic. We speculated that since B group sold out, maybe they filled up C group with people who would have been in B group? Either way I managed to survive the ordeal, and I'm about as timid on the track as they come. And I had a freakin' blast in the process!

I also really enjoyed Streets. I am looking forward to riding it again in the daytime, when I can get a better feel for it.

Video 1 and 2 are up and I'm working on the rest. This was my 3 session out I think, well 3 real session. The first one was a cluster fuk due to everything starting a bit late. They stuffed A and B together and by the time I got out there I got 2 laps in, with no sighting laps!:eek:

I didn't see a control rider all night, I'm not sure there was any in my group?

I think it looks a bit darker in the video than it actually was but you get the idea.

I just got back. Fun times last night, got there for the late bird special at 9pm. Going on 3 hours of sleep the night before, work all day in the heat, drive 3+ hours, ride all night I stayed till 2 in the morning. Last few sessions were great, a lot of people left so the track was wide open to haul ass. Having rode the track before during the day, riding it at night with the lights wasn't too bad, I was actually riding a lot better. Tires were cooling down too quick though, almost lost it on two occasions. Props to motoyard for putting on a great track night, I would do it again. There were a lot of riders and spectators out there, it was packed.:D

This is the second outing after the 2 lap A -B cluster. I like this session because you can see it get darker and darker every lap till the end. You also get a good feel of how bad the dark spots were before they changed the lighting.

At first I thought "Man this is pretty stupid to go ride a track in the dark with a bunch a friends for the first time" but we actually got almost two sessions with some light so it worked out. The track was cute and easy to learn. Then it got scary when it started getting dark, we couldnt see turn one and some of three but they fixed it. By the end of the night we were exhausted and left before it was over. At first we thought man this is stupid they didnt get the lights right but then they got that fixed and it was the SH!ZN!T!!! If you didnt come you kinda missed out, I have to do it in the day tho. But to ride in like 70 degree weather in the summer was great! Big props to Motoyard and the way they put things together and listened, didnt mind being apart of your project. And it sucked that I didnt get to meat non of you guys except CHUGS! One bad thing they didnt have instructors out there and C group was a cluster ph*CK. A and B group were okay tho

Alright the 3rd session, starting at 9:20 p.m., is finally posted up and ready to view. I made some passes I'm not proud of on this outing and was probably getting carried away a bit before the red flag :D.

Ha, the red flag wasn't due to me, I think it was a blue 07-08 R-1 down on the right hand side toward the end of the video taking a little nap in the dirt . I left this snip run till the end showing Raul was on my tail the whole time.

Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8oF-io6vk4

After the red flag just after the start there was another off track excursion by someone just before turn 3 on the left hand side. This brought out the flags in turn 2 and I was surprised at how well you could see the flags. Still really dark out of turn 2 thou

Hey Greeg your video does look much darker then it was, IMO like we said they had a few dark spots but then got them fix, besides it's not bad for their first night track day, I want to go again but during the day, I had a blast all night tough even know was defently nervous at the beginning but that went away after second session and was full blast enjoying the little track, I'll take my supermoto also next time :D .

Glad you guys had fun. Won't ever see me out there at night. I don't see good at night and I don't want to have to ride slower, I am sure guys weren't.running good times out there at night. I would go out and watch and have some adult beverages.:D

I know that the guy pitted next to me wanted to sign up in B group but was too late so he went for C group instead. I even heard him ask a tech if he could get bumped to B. C group looked so packed I wonder if they sold more in 'C' than the others?

I'm guessing that some of those late bird that came at 9pm where in C group also that's why it look so packed, IMO

Cool. I was wondering. Then I started to think "Oh Crap... maybe there was already a thread and I just didn't see it."

Anyway, cool! It will be cool to see some familiar faces out there. Even if I'm not hangin' with the cool kids. :)

Well thanks to who ever started the post we had a blast. The last turn sucked I think everyone lost their front ends there, and the drive home sucked @ss. The entry fee $10, The track day$99, The gas $75, putting my shades on as I parked the truck in the drive way at 6 am a couple hours before daughters 6th birthday was priceless.

What kind of camera is that? I saw better with your camera then some others during the day. I wasnt in any of your recordings tho (NO one ever pays me in gum) I think your camera has something against black Suzukis! Like only black dude with white boots out there how hard is it to spot me right:weirdface:
PS: I love the commentary tho lol!

After the bike played with my emotions and had her "doable" status off into the night (first time at Street) I went, it was a unique experience (enjoyable).
I would love to ride it in the daytime tho, there is so many to touchdown on that track and Ooops moments and even saw a new GSXR fly across the track (poor guy). I went out dirt farming once (getting pushed out). Besides all the bike drama and where's the track (some part), I enjoyed it..The track cost $100 but I think I made up for it with the free spreads:D
P.S.. The company was A+!!

Have they smoothed out the bumps through the skid pad? It looked re-paved (or was that shadow?).

B was definitely the most packed - I think group C are just the most eager to ride and were out there every session. I think the reason Group C "looked" packed was because it seems that guys in Group C like to ride in groups or bunches :)

I know that the guy pitted next to me wanted to sign up in B group but was too late so he went for C group instead. I even heard him ask a tech if he could get bumped to B. C group looked so packed I wonder if they sold more in 'C' than the others?

BTW: We did notice some guys in Group C who belonged in B, and I wish people would not sign up to the wrong group, just to get in or hoping they will get switched. The problem is - how can we switch someone to a full group - it will just be more full... By riding in the wrong group you are not only causing danger to yourself, but to other riders as well. It puts us in a bad position as well, because we have to choose which is better, leaving B guys in C or putting more people in B - either way it's a dangerous situation.

PLEASE, please sign up for the correct group. Sign up early or just sign up for another event if the group you want is full.

Yes - we had a k-rap load of lights! and only one ambulance - a good decision too - as there were less crashes than any other track day (during daylight)! We did have a bunch of extra corner workers though to make sure everyone is being seen. Some corners there were 2 corner workers. If that's not safety - I don't know what is :)

I'm sure they takeing alot of precaution(5 ambulance atleast lol) to make sure we all stay safe especially makeing first time under the lights

They are using rented lights, I just hope they rented a k-rap load of em'. :D

When has that ever happened? Track Daz doing things better? :) Maybe longer - but better - I don't think so.

And "F for thinking it through"? I just wish you guys knew how many people and hours went into setting it up and "thinking it through". That's a really stupid comment from McLuvin_R1.

Track Daz is working on something like this. I'll wait for them, they seem to do things better.

I can't imagine riding on a track with headlights at night.

Blakester is right, the shadows and constant glares of light will really screw your depth perception.

A for cool factor

Didn't really care for that pass at 8:05 in the 1st vid, some of those corners were pitch black!

No offense to anyone - I was on my race bike = no lights on the bike at all - in group B and A and passing with no problem. Our staff all know SOW very well, and most of us have been racing and riding it for years. We tried to keep the lights out of impact zones and at the same time light up the spots that were most important (without having the light be in your eyes). Its not as easy as you may think :) If it was darker in certain spots, its only because you should really be already looking at the entry for next turn :)

In the beginning of the night there were a few "darker" (and by "darker" I mean I could still see fine with my not so perfect vision without headlights) spots between 2 and 3 and before the bowl, but we listened to what you guys had to say and put more lights up. I think that kind of care is what sets Motoyard.com apart from everyone else. We did whatever it takes to make everyone happy! And we all had a great time!

Good news is - with all the feedback and experience - you can rest asured that the August track night will be AWESOME!

See you guys on Saturday night, August 21st!

Thanks for putting on this event and it looks like it was a huge success. You probably didn't have the amount of crashes because the riders were riding extra cautious due to the new riding conditions.

When has that ever happened? Track Daz doing things better? :) Maybe longer - but better - I don't think so.
However, let's try to prevent a pissing match about who is the best and who isn't especially coming from another track organization owner/staff member. All track day organization have something to offer for everyone and maybe not as much to some. But from what I have seen and heard from other folks just about all track orgs, that have been mentioned on this forum, have put on some great track days.
