What do you all think about breaking your bike in? Do you need to break a 1000cc in for 1000 miles?

Everyone has a different idea on the correct way to break in a new engine.
Personally I think you need to let it know what it is going to be in for without pushing it too hard (you can feel it if it doesn't want to rev). Don't baby it too much and don't sit at 5000rpm costantly while cruising down a freeway. Vary the revs.

I rode my bike the way it was meant to be ridden, from the moment I got it.

take it through the hills

its a constant load and unload that will heat cycle the parts. letting them warm and cool under different rpm and load. dont hammer it and it does not need to be babied <7k rpm with variatons is good untill the 600 mile service mark. after new oil and stuff is in it have fun.

as long as you don't stay at sustained rpm yer ok.
and vary the rpm range you ride at

Ive also heard two different takes on braking a new bike in. 1, there is an actual brake-in period and 2 , ride the bike like your stole it, right from the box.

It is not so much as ride it like you stole it, but you don't have to baby it around either. Just ride it like you normally would around town, this doesn't mean wringing it's neck either.

All the riders here have great advice, especially the "ride it like you stole it" bit. You also may want to ask the techs at the dealership for some advice and I believe the owner's manual might have recommendations as well.

I was told by a tech that heat it up and let it cool down twice and you will be right as rain.

I personally would just take it easy. Go through the gears, rev it up some, and get a few hours on it at least before twisting the throtle to hard.

Also the break in period is not so much for the bike as it is the rider. Its a time for you to get used to the new machine you are riding. It lets you figure out what your limits are as much as the bikes. Just take it easy and learn the bike and you should be fine.

Rather than take advise from a bunch of people on the internet, why not crack open that owners manual? I'm pretty sure all those little Japanese guys in white coats who designed your bike would have a fairly good idea of how to break it in:confused2:.

Break it in however you want.
The goal is to get the the rings and cyl. to seal.
The crank & bearings to match. etc. etc. etc.
All this without damaging anything. (metal will be floating in your oil)

Just my 2cts.

Hence the broken bones....sorry Mike had too :) ....
As for the topic of this discussion....
:)

The big wig from the service department of Triumph of America told me to break in my new rebuild like so ...

For the first 100 miles take it easy keep it under 4K rpm, varying the rpm's,
Then for the next 100 miles keep it under 7K rpm varying the rpm's
After the 500 mile oil change, ride it like I would on a daily basis .Then change the oil @1500 miles After that your bike will be broken in to ride like you stole it.

I broke my in hard didnt change the oil for 1900 miles.

I was scared so I had em inspect it, tey said I should of changed the oil, but everything looked good and no mtal, no shaving, and it runs like a champ!

Break it in however you want.

On my Ducati, they just said, don't lug it or bounce it off the rev limiter. And make it work a little harder, helps seat in the rings. Did that, and it runs great.

With my Japanes bike and Italian bikes, I rode them like they were meant to be riden. However, I didn't redline them or kept them at a constant RPM when they were new. Changed the oil at 600 miles, 1500, and 3000. Thereafter every 2500 / 3000 miles with full synthetic oil.

I don't baby my motorcycles, but I also do not abuse them. I keep up with the maintenance, which is the most important thing to do with any type of vehicle.
