View Full Version : Clutch adjust help!

Attempting to adjust the clutch on my 01 GSXR 1000 because it was not disengaging like I thought it should.
So . . . I am pretty mechanically inclined so i figured i would do it my self. Pulled out the service manual and followed directions to the letter. Now . . . cannot shift at all and clutch will not fully disengage in any gear. While running I can not shift at all. I tried a few different adjustments setups and still the same result.
What did I do wrong? Please help!
thx

If I can recall gixxers have two points of adjustment- up near the lever and bottum inside the clutch cover. If those adjustments are good than you need new clutch plates.

I'm starting to wonder about you. You must be a clawson service tech in disguise. Too much percise and articulated directions detailing pin point problem solving.

lol. well thank you I'll take that as a compliment but nope I'm just the guy who does tire mounting out of my garage(just kidding). I work on a lot of bikes besides the tire service. Im glad to help as long as I don't get my pretty hands greasy.:D

That is what i was thinking but not what i wanted to hear.
I'm a pretty good car mechanic but I have never done a clutch on a bike, is it something that is hard to do? Any special tools required? Are Barnett clutch plate decent (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Motorcycle-Parts-Accessories__01-04-Suzuki-GSXR1000-BARNETT-clutch-KEVLAR-GSXR-1000_W0QQitemZ230270366190QQadnZMotorcycleQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQadiZ2863QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item230270366190&_trksid=p3756.m14.l1318)?
I am going to raise the bike back to stock, do a 520 conversion this weekend so maybe i should just do a clutch replacement while i'm at it.

when it comes to clutch plates nothing is better then OEM. I've ran barnett before and never really had any problems but OEM is ideal for clutch plates

My personal opinion.
Don't like the Barnet Clutch, butt mine is DRY and yours is WET.
Two totally different systems.

Well I seem to have gotten it back to correct adjustment last nite but it still will need a rebuild.
For the rebuild do i need the entire kit? Springs, steel plates, Friction plates, Fiberpads, Gaskets, etc..
What parts do I need to replace. Sounds like from my conversation with hippylong yesterday it is only the fiberpads that ware.
Clawson has the entire kit but they want 350.00 for it.

First off, never buy your OEM parts from the local dealer. Clawson for instance is about 10% over retail. When I replaced the clutch on my 900, it was around $125 for the springs, plates and pads via on-line shops.

I want to bring up something else you might want to check.
Make sure your clutch cable is not stretch and about ready to break.

yea, thats a good deal...
you can fix it your self..
i agree with calkid.
cable stretching is way common..
i would replace it.
even if you do do plates
do a cable first..
but most of all run it till its a slipping...
you have like 9 plates on that model....thats a lot of plates...

Are you going to install the cable only? I am curious to see if that was the problem. I know that is what happened to me. The clutched felt like it was out of adjustment and as I started to tighten it up it broke.

I got the clutch back into adjustment so i can ride but it still does not feel 100% right. I will be swaping out the cable and see if that fixes it. if not i will rebuild the clutch. i'll let you all know.
