245 is a great road... it used to be my favorite... i would tear it up every sat and sunday, sometimes during the week after work if i needed to get rid of extra aggression... high sided the 996 on that road... out there all by myself, waited twenty minutes before someone drove by...

We actually added a little more fun to it, by taking the 198 to the 216, up the 245 to the 180, then back-tracked and at the Mountain House took Dry Creek Rd back down, a fun little road!
The roads were nice today, not a lot of gravel or sand, only in a few places... :)
Thayne & I were talking, the road needs a name with a 'hook'... :D the 'Lil' Dragon' is taken... 'squid killer' was tossed out there, so was 'corkscrew'... but nothing is sticking so far!
Then again, maybe we don't need a catchy name for it... heck, its not a well-traveled road, would be nice to keep it that way! :D

it's been called 245 for too long... it would be hard to get something to stick... everyone who knows that road, knows it as 245...

I had a fall there as well. In fact, it was my first ride on the 245. I had been riding alone around Pine Flat and just wanted to keep going. Going south, that slight downhill, left hand, sharp, decreasing radius turn got me. I simply ran out of road and dropped it as soon as I hit a small soft patch of red dirt. Thankfully the dirt & Manzanita brush kept it from going over the edge. After receiving some asistance and uprighting her, I continued my ride to Mountain House before riding it home.

What is the closest gas fillup in this area (where that map pin is)? Anything at/near the bottom of 245? I googled "Fuel" and turned up some non-exsistent fuel stop on 245 that stranded me. I had to coast down 245 most of the way to conserve fuel to make it back to a gas station on 245. NOT cool.

The trick is to begin your journey with a full tank from Woodlake or Orosi (to the south & west) or Squaw Valley to the north @ the 180.

Well I was thinking of a little different route (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=102393107676763382088.00047da5401a028164eb9&z=11). Should have enough fuel but I would like to be able to goof off in millwood a little then head down 245 all the way to either dunlap or 63 (which ever is more fun) to 180 and go straight home from there. The gas station at Academy and Kings Canyon was closed the last time I looked and that was my final fuel stop if I thought I was gonna run short a bit.

:word: running out of fuel sucks! Last time I went up the 245 it was pretty spontaneous so I didnt fill up on the 198 end. Was running on fumes by the time I hit the kings canyon road. Ended up getting about 58-60miles out of my last gallon coasting down the 180 drafting off the suv in front of me. Good times:D

I doubt we'll be seeing any fuel at 180/Academy any time soon. Maybe one of those camping fuel cells in your backpack? If you can make it to 180/Academy you're practically home...

When are you thinking about doing this one?
When road is DRY, the Aprilia is ready.........Rode it last sunday!
Gas is NOT a problem.........Squaw valley gas, 180/DUnlap road gas and you can make it to Woodlake gas, and then back up Monte..........I only get max 100 mi and do it all the time.........No use riding past Woodlake anyway as turn around and go back up, or over to the dry creek and up...........OVer to Piedra through WOnder Valley/Elwood road and gas there. I don't think there is a stretch over 50 miles without gas on that route?????
SO Montibank, when you riding?????? Pavement.......You and Poach can hit the dirt but i keep mine on OIL.........:D

I could be all wet here, but I believe the map he posted has a fair amount of dirt riding associated with it. Looks like trimmer east all the way to Bailey bridge...then south on that dirt road that hugs the river for a bit, then goes by Inbred Jed's place, then terminates on 180(roughly 20mi from Bailey to 180) near the delilah helipad. In which case we're probably not riding anytime soon as that roads probably 4ft of freshies at the moment.
But heck Carl, I was thinking about a nice 245 romp on Sunday. I'll holler at ya Sat night.:D

Yup. Some decent offroad sections. But I am trying to work a good loop for this for an oportunity for offroad play on sumo. Wanted to invite some of these hoolagans (http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=320139) over to the good life. Looks like they like to get em dirty so I figured I would put some dirt in there. For those that are looking for some really challenging dirt the can go play all they want in Millwood before heading back down the hill on 245.
If done properly I could time it so that we can meet those at the top of 245 for those that just wanna do road portion.
If you guys go riding this weekend... Let me know. Might have myself and one other sumo rider that would be interested.

Welp...I was up on millwood road(below delilah) on sat. I think it's safe to say we won't be doing that dirt section between Bailey and 180 any time this week...lol
But once things simmer down a bit I think the route you posted will be an outstanding blend of dirt/pavement. I like riding the ktm on the pavement too much to go with knobbies, so if/when we hit the truly challenging dirt sections...I'll be y'alls photohistorian. So def count me in for this one. It'll be a great ride, and it'll be nice to finally meet ya.

So start thinking up some clever names and when you come up next, let me know what they are.

Made a bid for the summit yesterday afternoon. Hit the FAIL button 4mi from 180. I'd been riding through patches of super soggy wet snow and barely making it...finally hit one that was long and steep enough to turn me around. Might have been able to make it with a knobbie rear, but then again a knobbie might have just ensured I'd have a much looooonger way to drag that bike back onto a ridable surface.
Few more days and she should be good to go. Sure am glad carl decided to throw the higher capacity fuel tank on that rascal...otherwise I'd have been screwed in a big way. lol
