View Full Version : Enhanced CHP crackdowns

Well, it seems to be official. With the recent reports of air and ground assaults in the foothills and now the Little Dragon, it appears that the CHP are making it a point to enforce the law on some of our most sacred roads.

I once thought these areas to be remote enough that they would leave us along, but it appears that they've decided to crack down hard this year.

In the past decade of riding the Little Dragon I have never seen it patrolled by aircraft. The road is a different place when you are at the will of a very slow driver that refuses to use the turnouts. On our last trip through the canyon, I was behind a car that was going 25-30 MPH. At one point, the car slowed down to 10 mph, as if they expected me to pass over the double yellow.

Prepare yourself people, it's going to to be an interesting summer. If you run into anything like this in the the future, please jump on here and let other riders now. A good way to ruin a good ride, is to come home with a ticket in your pocket. ;)

Sucked sitting under that tree thinking, "If i leave now, that CHP will prolly follow me, but if i leave later, the plane will prolly find me". Was a lose-lose to say the least. ****ty feeling.

good luck running from a plane fellas!
Really though, The Highway Patrol arent dumb. When they see a group of sport bikers hanging out in the mountains, half of them wearing Full leather suits, they know exactly whats going down. I'll still continue riding the twisites but i'll be much more aware of my surroundings.

If you run and can find a place to hide :evilgrin0013: just have a tank top and flip flops with you pull off the full leather suit and ride home...LOL...Running is never the answer. You can quickly go from a small infraction to a felony in a matter of seconds. It's just not worth it to run and possible even lose a lot more in the process.

The CHP that pulled us over said that he was thankful we didn't run. I guess it's still in the back of their minds, the one guy that runs, makes them feel that we all may run. When in reality, I'm sure that 99% of the guys he pulls over don't run. But I think it's funny that he felt the need to tell us the story of the last guy who ran from him. Like I can care less, just right me up and send me on my way.

Perhaps the authorities are monitoring our site and others to.
Think about it... they know ahead of time where riders will be and set up accordingly. We're screwed:mad:
Of course, some code talk (for a diversion) could work but a lot of work. Perhaps better, some personal phone communication to spread the word or just ride in smaller groups and on weekdays.
I'm sure some can get away.
Just a thought,

He should have just given you a warning as a reward since you didnt run :D

Why arent they enforcing the yielding law? If the idiots in their suvs going 25mph would use the turn outs we wouldnt have to pass them.

I think codes would work and we could only give them to people we know are real, IE someone you have ridden with.

In the last two years the dragon has become very popular! I can't believe how many bikes go there. It used to be our little slice of heaven and could ride there all day and only see a few bikes. Now it is motorcycle haven. I think we have ruined a perfectly good riding area by telling everyone where it is at. It just goes to show there can be too much of a good thing!

MadKaw

I also subscribe to the Kawasaki Triples forum, and most of them are are back east where the REAL dragon is, in North Carolina. They just got back from the dragon run and deals gap, they said the cops back there ruined it for them.

It wasnt just a random cop, they were saturated, even just sitting watching them at their places of rest.

Yeah I got stopped a couple months ago. It was dark and I just had this need to pull the front wheel off the ground. At the next stop sign, I launched it and up came the front. There was a car approaching the intersection and guess who it was. I saw the lights come on and so I just pulled over.

He said as fast as I was pulling away from him he thought I was going to run. He gave me a warning then thanked me for not running and let me go. I was really surprised he actually thought I was going to run. Pulling a wheelie through an intersection would not be cheap I'm sure but trying to run would have cost me so much more.

even if u were in a car and they didnt yield they still wouldnt get a ticket cause theyre goin as slow as theyre comfortable with i guess. The point is, ya gotta share the road with idiots, how it will always be. either deal with it, break the law and risk a ticket, or pick a new place to go that has less traffic. those are the choices. soooo sad :mad2:

I don't think that we are being singled out by the cops but I think that the individuals doing wheelies and shut give us a bad name. All the accidents and reckless speeds don't help our cause either. Its like insurance, insurance for a 1000 cc super sport bike will be higher than a 1000 cc cruiser. I don't think its the cops but the dumb asses that can't be mature enough to ride correctly. Every time I got a speeding ticket in my car or on my bike I got it cause I was speedin. Come on guys.

I think it's called impedeing traffic or something like that. My brother is a truck driver and told me they do get tickets for passing on a 4 lane highway if they hold up traffic in the process. I think it was an incident on hwy 99 he was telling me about. So I think slower vehicles not using the turn outs could in fact get ticketed for not using them when there is enough traffic held up behind them.

So I think slower vehicles not using the turn outs could in fact get ticketed for not using them when there is enough traffic held up behind them.
Here you go

VC§ 22400. Minimum Speed Law
(a) No person shall drive upon a highway at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic unless the reduced speed is necessary for safe operation, because of a grade, or in compliance with law.
No person shall bring a vehicle to a complete stop upon a highway so as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic unless the stop is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.

And here is the law regrading the use of turnouts.

VC§ 21656. Turning Out of Slow-Moving Vehicles
On a two-lane highway where passing is unsafe because of traffic in the opposite direction or other conditions, a slow-moving vehicle, including a passenger vehicle, behind which five or more vehicles are formed in line, shall turn off the roadway at the nearest place designated as a turnout by signs erected by the authority having jurisdiction over the highway, or wherever sufficient area for a safe turnout exists, in order to permit the vehicles following it to proceed. As used in this section a slow-moving vehicle is one which is proceeding at a rate of speed less than the normal flow of traffic at the particular time and place.
